Janet Eisenstein began her career as a scriptwriter and producer of interactive programmes for industry. She then went on to write stage plays, film and TV scripts full-time.
Her first play Marrano is set in Toledo, 15th Century Spain. This play had a performed reading at Upstairs at the Gatehouse.
In 2005, Janet was awarded a place on the highly prestigious “Feature Development Workshop” (one of five places) at the National Film and Television School to adapt Marrano for cinema. She subsequently completed the screenplay, her first fully developed script for film.
Obeying the Angel, her next play was commissioned by an independent producer, based on an outline concept. The story focuses on a woman who has defined herself in the context of her successful career only and not as a mother. It explores the guilt and frustration she feels when she gradually becomes aware of her own emotional detachment from her child. Since writing the play, it has been the subject of a workshop with actors and a director and is now currently in development.
Janet has a number of other original ideas in various stages of development. She is currently collaborating with two other writers on two long running TV drama series; a law series and a supernatural, action-packed drama. She is also working on a new stage play Riviera Dreams which takes place on a beach where dark secrets lie buried under the sand.
