In January 2010 Nick’s latest horror film THE REEDS was picked up for US release by Lionsgate and After Dark films. A UK theatrical release is in negotiation.
‘Performance-wise all the actors are top-notch. They go from perfectly natural acting friends to terrified and panicked in the blink of an eye. And never for a moment does the viewer doubt that their fear is real. As they die, one by one, the audience can't help but cringe.’
(DreadCentral.com – Scott A Johnson)
‘Director Nick Cohen does a nice job with what he has… Cohen’s best efforts make the film visually pleasing, which it is….Everything looks great…. solid work by Cohen.’
(Movie Cynics - The Vocabulariast)
‘Well-shot for a low-budget effort, appropriately well-paced for such a basic type of horror story, and populated by a few actors who actually know what they're doing (lead actress Anna Brewster is one to watch), The Reeds is a competent and compelling enough little horror flick…. Director Nick Cohen manages to keep his fairly familiar tale from ever becoming dull, and the guy keeps finding new ways to make such a generic location look somewhat interesting. (There are only so many ways you can shoot reeds, after all.)
One of the better offerings from After Dark Batch #4, I don't mind saying.’
(Fear.net Scott Weinberg)
Nick currently has several projects in development including;
THE ELECT a desert horror film originally developed with Robyn Slovo at Company Pictures now with Brian Levine at Delacheroy films,
LADY M a period thriller with Richard Osborne at Angeleye Films
ROTTENWOOD a horror film with Simon Crowe of SC films and Damon Lane formerly development head at Capitol Films.
Nick is a graduate of the BBC Drama Directors Academy and has gone to direct several blocks of EASTENDERS and DOCTORS.
In 2005 Nigel Thomas at Matador films signed up Nick’s second feature VOODOO LAGOON for Matador Pictures. Nick then shot the film in the Warner Studios, Queensland, Australia and on location in the surrounding jungle.
His debut feature film BEGINNER’S LUCK starring Julie Delpy and Steven Berkoff premiered at the London Film Festival in 2001, before enjoying a UK theatrical release in 2002. World sales were handled by Icon.
‘Hark is that the rumble of a decent British film? Its hard not to be swept up by it’
(HotDog 2002 - Four stars)
‘A spirited caper..an enjoyable romp that ..has a joie de vivre that bodes well for this multi-talented director’
(Whats On 2002)
Nick started out working the London fringe scene with his own theatre company:
‘Nick Cohen’s direction bears all the hallmarks of a Theatre de Complicite graduate. The choice of work is daring, the imagery striking, the acting understated yet bold.’
(Time Out on ‘The Power and the Glory’ at the Etcetera Theatre)
He has also enjoyed spells as the Literary Manager of the Gate Theatre, Assistant Director at the RSC and Staff Director at the Royal National Theatre, which were followed by documentary work for Channel Four.
Nick is represented by Emily Hayward at the Rod Hall Agency.
