Ali won Channel 4’s 4Talent Award for dramatic writing in 2008, and was shortlisted for the Rod Hall Memorial Award. His full length play ASHES won him a place on the Paines Plough/Channel 4 Future Perfect ‘08 scheme for emerging writers.
Ali’s work has been performed at various venues throughout London, including the Globe Theatre, Soho Theatre, Trafalgar Studios and Oval House. He has also had two plays performed at the Edinburgh fringe festival.
In mid-2008 Ali was commissioned by Oran Mor theatre in Glasgow, to write UNDER MY SKIN, a play about an autopsy. The play was performed at Oran Mor in November, co-produced by Paines Plough and directed by Roxana Silbert.
Ali was invited to join Soho Theatre’s Core Writers’ Group in 2007, writing the full length play BOOM, about 19th Century anarchists in London. The play received a reading at Soho Theatre in December 2007, and is currently undergoing further development.
ASHES was performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival in 2007, produced by Dancing Shadows Theatre Company. Ali’s previous full length play, PARASITES, was also performed at the Edinburgh fringe, in 2006, after a sell-out run at the Hen & Chickens Theatre in Islington.
Ali’s short play FURNACE FOUR won Soho Theatre’s Westminster Prize in 2006, receiving a performance at Soho Theatre. The play is now being turned into a film.
